The Energy Production and Infrastructure Center, or EPIC, at UNC Charlotte is a collaborative education and research facility. Acousti was a primary subcontractor on this state-of-the-art facility, the design of which incorporates the latest technology available in energy efficiency, LEED materials and Architectural components. The extensive use of a Chilled Beam system required Acousti to carefully coordinate our installation with the design team, construction manager, MEP trades and suppliers in order to ensure that all fixtures and equipment were properly integrated into the various ceiling systems. The multi-tiered 3-form translucent elliptical feature installed in the atrium provided new challenges. The custom design required the exacting placement of pitched panel segments, some weighing in excess of 600 lbs., suspended on welded stainless steel pipe assemblies. The layout of each elliptical form was then precisely aligned with those of the adjacent floors resulting in the striking “tiered effect” envisioned by the designer. This custom, one-of-a-kind installation is in keeping with Acousti’s unofficial motto: “If you can draw it, we can build it.”
