Originally built in the late 1950s, the Miami Beach Convention Center was due for a significant upgrade to stay competitive in the crowded but lucrative convention industry. The three-year, $620 million renovation project broke ground in December 2015, and the main phase was completed in October 2018.
The improvements include the addition of 950,000 square feet of space, 10 new meeting rooms and LEED Silver certification. The facility also received an upgraded exterior that uses more than 500 giant fins of aluminum and glass to create an undulating facade, reminiscent of an ocean wave rolling onto the beach.
Acousti Engineering Company of Florida was proud to be part of the team to make these renovations possible. The scope of work completed by Acousti included:
- Acoustical Ceilings
- Specialty Ceilings
- Metal Ceilings
- Exterior Framing
- Direct Applied Plaster
- Metal Wall Panels
- Acoustical Wall Panels
- Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum Column Covers
- Stretched Fabric Ceilings
- Stretched Fabric Wall Panels
As with any renovation project, Acousti faced some difficulties. The design of this building and its unique features were a constant reminder that kept us alert. One of the main challenges of this particular project, besides it being a major renovation and code upgrades, was that the facility had to remain open in phases for several trade shows. To manage this, Acousti coordinated the planning and erection of temporary walls, corridors and ceilings during the multiple phases of the project that would allow for proper entry and exit of the public attending shows while construction progressed around them.
This project also maintained an aggressive schedule to its substantial completion. Thankfully, the Acousti project team and Clark Construction Group have had years of experience working together on projects such as Nashville Music City Convention Center and the West Palm Beach Convention Center – to name a few, and were able to work together to stay on task and on time.
During this project, Acousti used many different products from brands such as Armstrong World Industries, USG, Owens Corning, Clark Dietrich Metal Framing, Dow, RAM, Amerimix, and Certainteed.
At Acousti Engineering Company of Florida, we are very pleased with the result of all of the hard work that went into this renovation. The new Miami Beach Convention Center is truly a beautiful space and the views of the ocean can’t be beaten.
